The raw material for Gown was a number of disparate elements: songs developed with my band in mind, songs I'd composed while experimenting with a computer and associated paraphernalia, and songs written simply, using just an acoustic guitar. Added to that mix was an array of field recordings I'd made in Cambodia with my ever-present little minidisc recorder.
Working over the last two years to blend these elements (some almost fully formed, some less so) into a coherent musical journey was a wonderful if at times convoluted process. I see the songs as paintings, and Jon has magically made them 3D, like Victorian peep hole theatres - but the aim throughout remained the same for us both - to make music which really meant something to us.
We've discussed at length why the record is called Gown, and although it started off as 'a nice short word', in the process of making the record it became more than that.
I love the fact that titles, like songs can mean different things to different people. I hope you enjoy Gown. Jo
